The evolution of visualization technology over the last decade has allowed scientists, designers, engineers and program managers in various industries to interactively visualize large volumes of 3-D data in real time, primarily using Unix-based, monolithic, million dollar super computers. These systems provided previously inaccessible real-time data visualization, enabling the industries to achieve new heights in joint understanding of complex data interpretation, large-scale structures, and highly detailed product designs. For example, in oil and gas exploration and production (E&P), this computing model enabled collaborative efforts to manage workflow, dramatically shorten project time frames, interpret reservoir data, and improve well planning.

By the year 2000, hundreds of visualization facilities had been built worldwide as a shift in the computer industry from Unix based systems to PC workstations created a divergence in technology. Workstation solutions leveraging the 3D gaming market’s insatiable need for better, faster performance created amazing advances in professional 3D graphics technologies, but were limited to the data handling capabilities of a single graphics card. But now, recent advances in CPU multi-core and multi-GPU technology, combined with ModViz’s graphics virtualization system, deliver the 3D performance and large data capabilities of the previous monolithic Unix systems at a fraction of the original cost of ownership.
