Panoram, a technology leader and innovator in visualization
is presenting several new desktop solutions at the SEG convention
running between October 10-15 in Denver, CO. "With the
emergence of powerful new low-cost workstations equipped with
the latest generation of graphics, and the active porting
of the Oil/Gas industries major software applications to PC
and LINUX, the realm of visualization can now be extended
to the individual user and to the desktop", stated Theo
Mayer, Panoram's President/CEO.
In response to this trend, Panoram is gathered various exciting
desktop solutions, teamed with specific applications to present
functional solutions aimed at actual upstream workflow issues.
The displays include hosting the Kodak Stereo 3D Display as
well as the LightSpace DepthCube Z1024, plus Panoram's field
deployable MK3 wide-field display.
The
Kodak Stereo 3D Display technology represents a dramatic breakthrough
over lenticular, parallax and barrier screen auto-stereoscopic
monitors, delivering outstanding image quality, incredible
depth of field, SGXA resolution, and excellent contrast and
brightness ratios.
At the heart of the display is a Kodak-patented monocentric
lens system that provides a generous 43-degree horizontal
field of view, giving users the experience of viewing a 60-inch
image from just three feet away. With this size and resolution
of image, coupled with an optical design that reduces eyestrain
and user fatigue, viewers are able to work on the display
for longer periods of time with increased productivity.
Panoram has paired this display technology with Landmark Graphics'
Linux based GeoProbe volume visualization and interpretation
system, which allows geoscientists to explore multiple seismic
attributes and well logs simultaneously in 3D without the
encumbrances of glasses or other paraphernalia.
"Our focus is more than technology, it's about enhanced
workflow, and so we are trying to put together the right computer
platforms with the right application software with the right
visual systems to provide our customers with powerful new
visualization capabilities that solve actual needs."
Said Mayer.
This same approach applies to the pairing of Schlumberger's
PC based Petrel well planning capabilities with LightSpace's
DepthCube display.
The
DepthCube Z1024 3D Display is a unique rear-projection volumetric
display in which a high-speed DLP(TM) video projector sends
a series of 3D image slices into a 3D projection volume. The
projection volume is composed of a physically deep stack of
20 electronically switchable liquid crystal scattering shutters.
At any instant in time 19 scattering shutters are transparent
and only one is in a white scattering state. The display switches
a single shutter into the scattering state, which causes the
appropriate image slice corresponding to its physical depth
to be displayed on it.
With each image slice stopped at the correct depth in the
projection volume, the DepthCube produces a 3D image that
is truly deep. Patented 3D anti-aliasing hardware virtually
eliminates the visual discontinuities between layers so that
the 3D image appears to be completely smooth and continuous.
With the high speed projector sending out 1000 image slices
per second, the whole volume is refreshed 50 times a second.
Because it is actually displaying the 3D image in a volume,
the DepthCube display allows a small group of 2-3 users to
review and collaborate with each user seeing the correct parallax
3D from their viewing position. This makes it an ideal tool
for work such as well plan reviews such as that in Schlumberger
Information Solutions Petrel software.
Petrel is an integrated Windows PC software solution for
seismic interpretation through reservoir simulation. All workflow
processes and features found in Petrel contribute to the development
and refinement of the same 3D volumetric earth model. The
common environment and powerful workflow management capabilities
automatically captures knowledge as the work progresses. This
eliminates the information mismatch or information exchange
loss when using individual applications and is the basis for
integrating new data and rapidly updating dated earth models,
thus lowering overall E&P risk.
Joining
these exciting technologies from partners is Panoram's field
deployable PV290 FRM MK3-CS multi-panel display. "This
display solution was developed as a mini-command center for
military special forces and government first responders with
the ability to set up in under 5 minutes. This immersive display
provides the oil/gas industry the ability to take visualization
systems to where the action is." Says Mayer.
Panoram teamed this display with GIS software from DigitalGlobe
and Keyhole, which provide amazing abilities to view high-resolution
earth images from down-to-earth detail to wide field overviews
. DigitalGlobe will be introducing a new product and services
especially for the oil/gas industry at this year's SEG convention.
"Since 1998, Visualization technologies have emerged
as proven core capabilities for upstream workflow activities
in the oil/gas industry. Changes in computer platform, software
applications and visual systems now offer more benefit to
the industry than ever. We are very proud to be able to present
such leading edge solutions to our customers at SEG",
Mayer concluded.
