Panoram's PV230 DSK Enhances Gaming and Audio Production
Applications
January 22, 2003 - Sun Valley, Calif. - What do gamers and
audio engineers have in common?
At two recent major trade expos - the Consumer Electronics
Show in Las Vegas, Nev. and the National Association of Music
Merchandisers Show in Anaheim, Calif. - it became clear that
at least one thing they have in common is a great interest
in using Panoram's PV230 DSK for their respective addictions.
The PV230 DSK is a highly stylized, 3072x768-resolution desktop
visualization system, utilizing three LCD panels in a wraparound
array, with a mere 11mm of separation between them. Used with
a three-headed graphics card, such as the Matrox Parhelia,
the PV230 DSK provides a single giant "desktop",
making it perfect for software applications that benefit from
the massive screen real estate or from an immersive visual
experience.
Consumer Electronics Show (CES)
As
it turns out, this made it a perfect match for Intel Corporation,
who not only used it in their booth at CES2002, but also on
stage at CEO Craig R. Barrett's keynote speech to demonstrate
the concept of the "extended PC" in gaming applications.
In the speech, a member of Mr. Barrett's demonstration team
explained how the PV230 DSK enhances the gaming experience,
"Well, games are about action. And to get all the action
a gamer needs you need power
we're using this really
cool three-screen display from Panoram Technologies, and the
game we're playing here is called Neverwinter Nights; it's
a fantasy role-playing game. This is what I call an immersive
gaming experience. So if you want to see what's lurking around
the corners, you can. You can see everything around you in
this really great panoramic view. I can play with my buddies
online and open up my inventory and map without blocking the
play area

National Association of Music Merchandisers Show (NAMM)
Soon
after the PV230 DSK immersed the consumer electronics world
in gaming, it opened up the world of music, exhibiting the
use of Steinberg's popular Cubase audio production software.
Employing four of the PV230 DSK displays in their booth at
NAMM, Steinberg demonstrated how the Cubase software could
be operated at its full potential simply by working with more
screen real estate.
Cubase offers a host of tools and utilities for manipulating
the media in windows that can be positioned and sized anywhere
on the screen. Also, the graphic representation of audio tracks
is naturally oriented in a horizontal manner, making the wide
aspect ratio of the PV230 DSK a perfect fit. The super-thin
separations between the LCD panels on the display enable a
window to be stretched across the entire screen, with almost
no visual distraction between panels.
Other Apps
Applications for the PV230 DSK extend far beyond the gaming
and music industries. It is compatible with almost any software
running on Windows, Linux, MAC OS, HP, Sun or SGI platforms.
Indeed, the PV230 DSK improves the computing experience of
virtually any task, from spreadsheet analysis, electronic
publishing and photo editing to engineering, product design
and scientific analysis. For more details on this powerful
visualization system, click
