Panoram And 3D Perception Settle Patent Dispute Litigation
October 28, 2002 - Los Angeles, CA
After 15 months of litigation, Panoram Technologies, Inc.
of Sun Valley, CA - who filed a patent infringement suit against
3D Perception, A.S. of Norway have agreed on a global license
agreement for the California company's edge blending technology
which allows multiple video projectors to be integrated into
extremely high-resolution seamless images.
Although the details of the settlement are undisclosed, Theo
Mayer, Panoram's President and CEO, did reveal that the agreement
involves a license on a per-channel basis and the acknowledgment
of the validity of the Panoram edge-blending patents subject
to the terms stated in the license. "In the end, Johan
Litleskare, 3D Perception's Chairman, and I sat down without
lawyers present and worked out a deal that was acceptable
to both parties," said Mayer.
The agreement covers various US, Canadian and European patents
as well as other international patents pending and ends the
more than a year-long dispute that has been closely watched
by the display, simulation, staging and visualization industries.
Panoram has been in licensing discussions and negotiations
with a number of companies around the world as the uses of
seamless multi-projector displays has expanded from a very
limited and obscure flight simulation market to much broader
applications including: scientific visualization, geophysical
analysis and earth sciences, engineering, virtual prototyping,
intelligence imaging and even event-media and entertainment.
Mr. Litleskare, one of the co-founders of 3D Perception commented
that, "It is time to end the distractions of this litigation
and get back to cooperation and good business." This
does indeed seem to be the case as Panoram, in a separate
deal, agreed to acquire several sets of 3D Perception's innovative
projection theater design software known as Compact Designer®.
"This software from 3D Perception is truly innovative
and elegant. It will help us with the design of display systems
and facility installations for our customers," said Mayer.
"We want to find ways to cooperate and leverage one another's
innovations and strength to expand the business and application
of multi-projector displays," he concluded.
